In addition to those pens (we know you love them) and some new paperclips (better than that sounds), we're holding a raffle at SLA this year. It's a bit of an experiment but we hope you'll take to it in the spirit that we're offering it: we'll be asking for business cards and, for ten winners, purchasing carbon offsets for their roundtrip travel to SLA.
TerraPass is a local company that uses the purchase of carbon offsets for your car, your air travel and your home to invest in clean energy projects. We'll be purchasing the winners' offsets through them. We don't know if carbon offsets are the way to go to solve any of the global warming problems but we think it can't hurt to try and hope you'll enter to win to become part of the solution as well.
We'll also be offsetting our own travel - for those going from California each flight produces 867lbs of CO2. Ben's flight from New York produces 1,439 lbs. As for me... I'll do my part by ... um... sitting here with the air conditioner off?
Super idea about the carbon offsets "giveaway." I was part of the Environment & Resource Mgmt Div. workgroup that was pushing green ideas for the conference so I'm really happy to see the exhibitors getting into the spirit.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your comment and for working to make the conference more green. We might have been a bit ahead of our time on this one, since we did these offsets for the 2007 conference and not the last one with the overall green theme!
