Q: What is the most important thing that's happened in computing in the past 10 years?
A:
I think that cloud computing deserves a place on the podium. It's a paradigm shift that pushes a new way to deliver and consume IT services based on the Internet. In a few years, cloud IT services will be so pervasive that companies that decide to work out of the cloud will be in serious trouble.
Q: By the end of your career, where do you think computer science
will have taken us? What are you working on that might contribute
toward that?
A: I hope that advances in computing will lead to a world in which everyone has an opportunity to learn, share opinions, know people from remote regions, and get closer to their cultures. I think that computing and the Internet are the keys to sharing knowledge amongst people, which, in turn, is the key to a better world.
I work on enterprise application and information integration, with an emphasis on extracting information from the Web. My contributions will help applications collaborate in the cloud and gather data from many different places on the Web, aggregate them, and transform them into distilled information from which people can benefit.
Q: Who is your favorite historical figure? Why?
A:
I admire people like Mother Teresa, Vicente Ferrer, Lech Wałęsa, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, and a long list of people who have contributed to fraternity, peace, the end of armed conflicts, and a better society. I profoundly admire other people who are not so popular, but work toward the same goals.
Q: If you weren't working in the computer science field, what would you be doing instead?
A: I'm passionate about my work on software engineering at my university. I can't think of doing anything else well.
Q: What is your favorite type of music?
A: I like almost every type of music, from classical to ethnic music or flamenco. However, I must confess that I'm very keen on '60s and '70s music.
