Featured in Five is a monthly section where we pose questions to a Computing Reviews featured reviewer. Here are the responses from our April featured reviewer, Gulustan Dogan.
Q) What is the most important thing that's happened in computing in the past 10 years?
A) Deep learning accelerated the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) with its fast, magical black box nature.
Q) If you weren't working in the computer science field, what would you be doing instead?
A) I would be a doctor since I loved studying human biology in high school.
Q) By the end of your career, where do you think computer science will have taken us? What are you working on that might contribute toward that?
A) I think there will be advances in using quantum computing for AI. For instance, quantum computing will allow AI systems to detect patterns that traditional computers could not. In my research on AI, quantum computing is one of my planned future areas of study.
Q) Who is your favorite historical figure? Why?
A) Al-Khwarizmi is my favorite historical figure. The word “algorithm” derives from his name.
Q) What is your favorite type of music?
A) The sound of rain.
