Featured in Five is a monthly section where we pose questions to a Computing Reviews featured reviewer. Here are the responses from our September featured reviewer, David Gustafson.
Q) What is the most important thing that's happened in computing in the past 10 years?
A) The extensions to the theoretical foundations of computer science.
Q) If you weren't working in the computer science field, what would you be doing instead?
A) I started graduate school in mathematics. I briefly worked in meteorology in the United States Air Force (USAF). When I returned to grad school, computer science was the thing to do. If I had not left grad school the first time, I probably would have been a math professor.
Q) Who is your favorite historical figure? Why?
A) Ptolemy II Philadelphus, who founded the Great Library of Alexandria and established books as the repository of knowledge.
Q) What is your favorite type of music?
A) In the 50s, rock and roll; in the 60s, folk; …; today, quiet jazz.
